World War II Switzerland: Really Silent Observers?

Introduction -

Setting the Stage

The year was 1939, and Europe was still quaking in the aftermath of World War I.  The citizens of her many countries were discontent with their new, democratic governments and ever-present economic problems.  This environment was fertile for the growth of dictators who shouted revolution and blamed the problems of their nation on the despised Treaty of Versailles, the document that ended World War I and forced the Central Powers to unconditionally surrender and pay millions of dollars in damages.  This political strategy was extremely successful, and gave rise to infamous dictators such as Hitler, Mussolini, and Lenin, all who had differing political views, but the same goal: the conquering of the world.

Some time in early 1941, at the Axis Power’s peak, an alliance was made between Nazi Germany and Switzerland.  While the exact specifications of the alliance have yet to be uncovered, its nature was quite clear.  In the following years until the war’s end in 1945, Switzerland’s neutrality was manipulated and abused in several ways.  The first, and by far, most important use of the Swiss was in the abuse of their strong national bank and stable currency.  The Swiss National Bank and other associated banks were used as stor...
