“We kiss and the angels sing….” (We. Pg.1) such was the power of the words of a man called Benny Goodman. In his career which spanned 50 years, Benny made an impact on the world of music unlike anyone else before him. He received titles such as “King of Swing” but had to share/dispute over “The best clarinet player in the world” with another musician. He was in sense a musician’s musician, a man who allowed music to rule his life and define who and what he was. “Benny” Goodman was born may 9th 1906 into a life a poverty, he earned all he ever gained in his life, nothing was ever handed to him. It was during a concert when he was imitating Ted Lewis (gottsegn pg. 1)that he came to the attention of Ben Pollack. Ben Pollack was a drummer trying to start up a band. It was with Pollack that Benny made his first recording when he was seventeen; the song “He’s the Last Word” is the first ever known recording of Benny playing.
