Laughter and Lesson Plans

     Jerry King, the author of this article, stresses that humor in the
classroom is an extremely valuable tool in effective teaching.  He was a
business education teacher and is currently a public speaker, conducts
conferences and workshops and is the author of, “Help, I’m Talking and I
Can’t Shut Up: How to Improve Your Laugh Life.”
     The author explains how important it is for students to see the human
side of our personality.  One does not have to be a stand up comedian and tell
jokes throughout the school day.  I believe his message is to lighten up and
laugh a little.  He defines humor in the classroom as creating a positive
atmosphere where students are not afraid to make mistakes.  They can take
chances in the security of their “own room”.
     I think that this approach would help the children relate to me, as their
teacher, much better.  If and when they see that I can laugh at my own
shortcomings, hopefully they will learn to do the same.  Laughter seems to be
a wonderful barrier breaker.  If my relationship with them can, at the
appropriate times, be one of  happiness and fun - I believe we would have a
more sincere, two way relationship.  As opposed to me always trying to
“break - through”.
