For many people, television is a large part of daily life. Often television is misused in families in many ways: as a time-filler (“You have nothing to do? Go watch TV.”), tranquilizer (“When the kids come home from school they’re so keyed up that they need to watch for a while to simmer down.”), a problem solver (“Kids, stop fighting. It’s time for your program.”), a procrastination device (“I’ll just watch one more program before I do my homework.”), a punishment (“If you don’t stop teasing your little sister, no TV for a week.”), and a reward (“If you get an A on your composition you can watch an extra hour of TV.”). In these ways television is disastrous, but it can be changed easily. The content of what the child views is important to the educational growth of that child. There are a precious few genuine educational innovations in our country, and “Sesame Street” is one of them. The series’ research clearly supports its effectiveness: “ ‘Sesame Street’ boasts votes of approval from the 16 million children who watch the show each week, as well as their parents, who witness their children learning from the Muppets, the music, the animation, and the characters treating each of the respect and good humor”(Chen 31). “Sesame Street” teach children how to count, play games, and make friends as...
