The space age has brought about many human achievements. The
space industry has been an important part of 20th century
Florida because it has brought technology and jobs to
Florida. Space exploration dates back to Jules Vernes' book,
"From the Earth to the Moon," in which Florida is the launch
site for a lunar exploration  mission.
The 'Space Race' started on October 4, 1957 when the
Soviet Union launched the first man made satellite, Sputnik
Zemli. Its name, roughly translated, means "traveling
companion of the world." This satellite gathered information
on the upper atmosphere and meteorites. The United States'
response to this was to launch Explorer 1, an inferior
satellite compared with Sputnik 1 and 2. The launch site
selected for this was Cape Canaveral, starting Florida off
on as the center for rocket launches.
The second round of the space race was putting man into
space. Spacecraft were first tested with other mammals like
dogs and chimpanzees to make sure humans could survive in
the hostile conditions of Earth orbit. The first man to
orbit the earth was Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961. The
first American in orbit was John Glenn, who flew in the
Mercury rocket.

The next stage of the space program was to prepare for

is why so many of the geographic names are in Cyrillic.
However, the goal of the U.S. was not to map the moon, but
put men on it. To accomplish this goal, the U.S. sent five
Surveyor rockets to orbit the moon and search for decent
landing sites. While the U.S. was doing this, the Soviets
guided unmanned rovers around the moon's surface.
The Apollo missions utilized the most powerful rocket
ever bui...
