Evolutionary beliefs were present long before Darwin, but no one developed a sensible theory. There were beliefs in how plants would change to adapt to their surroundings. For an example Jean-Baptiste Lamarck believed that plants and animals had natural desires or inclination to change from simple to complex creatures. This could explain why plants and animals changed. Darwin’s grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, believed in evolution but he contained too little of facts to secure the scientific world of his findings.
Darwin used a lot of the old theories and backed them up with strong evidence. He spent many years of his time studying multiple species and animals in the Galapagos Islands west of the coast of Peru, South America.
