In the story, “A Rose for Emily,” by William Faulkner, the main character is Miss Emily Grierson.  She is an insane person who has problems dealing with moving on when someone dies.  The story takes place after she has died.  The town’s people are the ones telling the story.  Basically the story is a flashback.
Miss Emily lives in a big house all by herself.  She was never married.  She almost got married to a guy named Homer Barron.  He came to town to work on the streets.  “When she had first begun to be seen with Homer Barron, we had said, ‘She will marry him.”  “We learned that Miss Emily had been to the jeweler’s and ordered a man’s toilet set in silver, with the letters H.B. on each piece.”  When the streets were finished, that was the last time that the town’s people saw of Homer.  And that was the last they saw of Miss Emily for awhile.

After her father had died the only person that was seen coming and going out of her house was the Negro, named Tobe.  He would bring Miss Emily her groceries.  He would do other things around the house for her.
Miss Emily’s house for a long time had a terrible smell around it.  So one night, four men sprinkled lime around it.  The smell around her house was a major factor of her insanity.  One day Miss Emily goes to the druggist and asks, “I want some poison.”  The poison that she asked for was “arsenic.”  The druggist didn’t want to give it to her.  Before he handed it to her he said, “If that’s what you want.  But the law requires you to tell what you are going to use it for.”  Miss Emily just stared at him.  The next day everyone thought that she was going to kill herself.
Miss Emily was a lonely woman.  After her father had died, the only thing that was left to her was the house.  The day after his death the ladies went to the house and offered their condolenc...
