Richard Wilbur, the author of "The Writer", got the idea of the poem from the simple fact that it actually happened.  He was in his home when he heard his daughter typing and realized what she was doing.  It also happened to be in the same room where a starling had been trapped a few years earlier. From this event the inspiration came for him to write a poem.  This was unusual because he stated that so rarely is he able to write about an actual event.
     Richard Wilbur is in his house one day when the sound of a typewriter gets his attention.  He realizes it is his daughter writing a story.  As he listens, he notices she often pauses, only to continue a few seconds later typing furiously.  This makes him think about the starling that had been trapped in that same room a few years earlier.  It kept trying to escape, battering itself up against the window, not giving up, until it finally was free.  He wishes his daughter to be like the starling and not to give up in the difficult times.  
     The author simply wanted to encourage his daughter not to give up in her pursuit of becoming a writer.  At each pause of the typewriter, he wishes her even harder not to give up.  This is apparent through the lines
          It is always a matter, my darling,
          Of life or death, as I had forgotten, I wish
          What I wished you before, but harder
He realizes that she has been through a lot in life, just like him.  He hopes she becomes like the starling and doesn't give up.
     Wilbur's tone is that of encouragem...
