The Love of the Last Tycoon was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald over a period of two years.  Fitzgerald original name for the book was Stahr / A Romance.  This was changed when Fitzgerald's Hollywood companion, Sheilah Graham, sent his work in progress to Maxwell Perkins, Fitzgerald's editor.  Sheilah claimed that three weeks before Fitzgerald died, he said --
"What do you think of this title? — The Love of the Last Tycoon."  At first, Sheilah wasn't sure what to think of the  title.  Fitzgerald submitted the title to his editor and it was chosen over Stahr / A Romance.  Hence the name, The Love of the Last Tycoon.
In the novel, there are three main characters.  The protagonist, Monroe Stahr, is involved in the movie business.  Stahr is a very charming man, flaunting his good looks and his high class attitude, while the ladies swoon at his feet.  He desires the attention, but only has eyes for one girl.  That is Kathleen Moore, otherwise known as Thalia.  Thalia is an average middle class girl that has nothing going for her but her good looks.  She is a smart girl, but isn't successful in anything she does.  Fitzgerald shows these two characters through the eyes of Cecelia Brady, the narrator.  Cecelia is of the movies, but not in them.  She is intelligent, cynical, but understanding and kindly toward the people, great or of little importance, who are of Hollywood.  Cecelia and Thalia find themselves attracted to Stahr, but certain events prevent either of them from being together.
The Love of the Last Tycoon starts off aboard a plane.  Stahr, Wylie, Cecelia, and Cecelia's father are on their way to Los Angeles, where the story takes place.  This is where Cecelia and Stahr first meet, and Cecelia realizes that she loves Stahr.  Wylie and Stahr are friends that work together in L.A.  Cecelia's father, Brady, is Stahr's boss at the film company.
When they arrive in Los Angeles, Stahr wants to get started on his movie idea that he has had for some time now.  Brady isn't all that fond of Stahr, but is willing to give his new idea a try.  While Stahr elaborates on his idea, Brady gets upset because he realizes that they won't profit at all from the film.  This sets up a conflict between Stahr and Brady.  Brady doesn't want the film to be produced, but Stahr insists that it will be worth it when he knows that it won't be.  Brady had never liked Stahr to begin with, and had contemplated having him killed. This doesn't happen though. Despite Brady's hatred for ...
