˙After reading the article, "Thomas Jefferson: Radical and Racist" in your newspaper, my
attitude first response was swift and decisive.  When I read the subtitle of the article I immediately
summed it up for what it was, an attempt by minority groups on the war path to desecrate a true
American hero.  I know more than what average persons knows about Thomas Jefferson due to
my participation in an Advanced Placement American History course.  I know about his being a
founding father and recognize that he did have affairs with his slaves.  I also knew about his ideas
on strict interpretation of the constitution and that he founded of the republican party.  Still, I did
not think, and still do not, that he had so many flaws and that he was beyond redemption.  
     Totally contrary to previous opinions about Jefferson, this article presented a different
view of him.  Conor Cruise O’Brien gave strong arguments against Jefferson, "Sage of
Monticello."  A major argument presented was that Jefferson was a hypocrite because of his
views on slavery.  It states that he was pro-slavery, yet felt that all men were created equal and
that this was hipocracy.  One must remember the time period and location of Jefferson before
judging him for his views.  He was born and raised in Virginia, a slave state, and taught from
childhood that slavery was both necessary for economical reasons and morally correct because
blacks were considered animals.  It was considered humane to keep them as slaves during that
period in time.  We know now that those ideas were wrong, but they were considered right...
