The Cardiovascular Field
The Cardiovascular field is a high-tech medical field where technologists and nurses assist cardiologists diagnose and treat heart disease. Within cardiovascular technology there are two specialties - invasive and noninvasive.
Invasive cardiovascular technologists assist cardiologists and surgeons in such surgical areas as cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, pacemaker insertion, and open heart surgery. Cardiac catheterization is where small catheters are inserted through a needle into the blood vessels and into the heart, and angioplasty is where balloon catheters open blocked arteries. The technologist monitors the patient's condition, acts as a surgical scrub assistant, operates lab equipment, gives the patient clot dissolving drugs, and assists in emergency procedures.
Noninvasive cardiovascular technologists operate ultrasound equipment that records images and flow patterns from the heart, perform EKGs and stress tests, and evaluate arteries for blockages. It involves sophisticated electronics and computers used to evaluate a patient's anatomy and physiology.

Nature of the Work
Cardiovascular technicians who obtain EKGs are known as electrocardiograph technicians. To take a basic EKG, the technician attaches electrodes to the patient's chest, arms, and legs, then manipulates switches on a electrocardiograph machine which obtains the reading. The test is done before most types of surgery and as part of a routine physical examination, especially for persons who have reached middle age or who have a history of cardiovascular problems.
More skilled EKG technicians perform Holter monitor and stress testing. For Holter monitoring, technicians place electrodes on the patient's chest and attach a portable EKG machine to the patient's belt. After about 24-48 hours of normal routine for the patient, the technician removes a cassette tape from the monitor and places it in a scanner. After checking the quality of the recorded impulses on an electronic screen, the technician prints the information from the tape so that it can be interpreted later. The printed output from the scanner is eventually used by a physician to diagnose heart ailments.
In a treadmill stress test, EKG technicians document the patient's medical history, explain the procedure, connect the patient to an EKG monitor, and obtain a baseline reading and resting blood pressure. Next, they monitor the heart's performance while the patient is walking on a treadmill, gra...
