Critical Essay of Mediator Skills
4/2/98
My Mediation Skills
Over the coarse of this semester I have been given the opportunity to become a mediator.  Although I have only mediated twice, I feel as though I have gotten a hold of what it means to be a mediator, and the role mediators play in mediation situations.  I am glad that I took the coarse of Mediation and Conflict Transformation because I feel it will be beneficial to my career choice.  I want to become a counselor, specifying in the area of drug and alcohol rehabilitation.  If I get the opportunity to become a counselor I think I can put my mediation skills to work by using them to mediate family arguments, or drug related failures in relationships.  So far I have received a good amount of direction in the mediation field, and in my role plays I was able to get a for what a mediator does.

Before we began the process of telling stories, I asked both parties if it was all right with if I took some notes about the mediation.  They were both fine with it.  We jumped right into the story telling after I explained the my role and such.  I wanted them to tell there stories separately so that I could analyze both of there sides. I asked them if they had a preference to who spoke first, and Jenny wanted to go first.   Right after we started with Jenny’s side of the story,...
