The title “A Wife’s Story”, by Bharati Mukherjee, is significant because it implies the new life of Panna, an Indian wife, in America.  Panna is being confused between her desire to keep her Indian values as a woman verses her desire to be accepted as an American woman.  This confusion has led to a deep pain in Panna, which is caused by having to make a very critical decision that will affect her life as a woman.
Panna, who is an Indian wife, is in America to get an education.  The new type of lifestyle she experiences in America leads her to a sense of confusion.  This sense of confusion is caused by Panna’s desire to be accepted as an American woman verses her other desire, which is to retain her Indian values as a woman.  By living in America, she is able to do and experience things that normally wouldn’t occur if she were with her husband in India.  A prime example of this would be when she hugs Imre on Broadway.  This hug took Imre by surprise.  A hug is a way of showing affection and love towards a person and is also something to cherish.  Neither Panna’s husband nor her brothers would ever hug someone on Broadway.  To Panna, being able to hug someone, especially in front of people, means something special to her because it shows that you are not afraid to express how you feel.  Being able to do and feel special things like this is what makes her want to be accepted as an American woman.  Yet she also wants to retain certain Indian values of a woman such as the way of dressing.  Panna feels she needs to make a transition out of her American clothes into a sari, which is a type of Indian clothes, to meet her husband at JFK.  She feels this need because she doesn’t want it to seem that she has lost all of her Indian values.  She wants to retain certain Indian values like this so that she can still keep her heritage, while at the same time be accepted as an American woman.  By wearing a sari, Panna is showing who she is really is and that she will always be that person no matter what happens to her in life.  Little things like this is what makes Panna realize it is important for her to maintain a strong heritage as her new life in America continues.
This confusion has led to a deep p...
