Machiavelli was an Italian political thinker.  When people talk about Machiavelli or his political ideals they sometimes find them to be mean, ruthless, or in some cases, rash.

          Machiavelli was born in Florence, Italy on May 3, 1467.  Until the year of 1498 there is very little information on his life.  Most think that this is the time when he was educated and began thinking of his political ideals.  In 1498, Machiavelli served in the Chancellery of Florence.  During this term Machiavelli traveled on many diplomatic missions.  While doing this he came into contact with many Italian rulers of the time period.  His favorite ruler was Cesare Borgin, whom Machiavelli would watch get rid of lesser rulers who stood in his way.  This is were he finalized his political attitude.  His diplomatic missions also took him to France and Germany during the early 1500's.  Machiavelli took the initiative to form a new army in Florence, but he condemned the use of mercenary armies.  Then, in 1512, the Republic of Italy was overthrown and the Medici family- a family that had a hand in all aspects of Italian peoples lives- returned to Florence.  The Family tortured Machiavelli on suspicion of conspiracy, and was banned for a year from the city.
