The Gaza Strip has a long history of control by various foreign powers. According to the 1947 United Nations partition plan for Palestine, the Gaza area was to become part of a new Palestinian Arab state. However, the Arabs rejected the UN proposal. When Israel declared its Independence in 1948, the Egyptian army attacked Israel in what soon became known as the first Arab-Israeli War. The Gaza Strip came under Egyptian control, and its population increased sharply as Palestinian refugees fled the fighting in southern Israel. In 1956 Israel took the Gaza Strip in retaliation for Egypt’s actions in nationalizing the Suez Canal and closing off shipping routes to Israel. Under international pressure, Israel soon relinquished the territory. During the next 10 years Egypt used the Gaza Strip as a standing area for terrorist attacks against Israel. This led to the outbreak of the six-day war of 1967, in which Israel occupied the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights. During the next 20 years the Israeli Government built Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip to Strengthen the Israeli presence. Anger raging from Israeli occupation, a weak economy, and a large refugee population made the region a center for Palestinian activism and political unrest. In 1993 Israeli and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) leaders signed a peace agreement calling for limited Palestinian self-rule in the Gaza Strip And West Bank town of Jericho. By the mid-1994 most of Palestinian Authority had assumed administrative control. However, tension and violence continued in the region. As of June 1996 Israel and the Palestinian Authority had yet to resolve further transfers of power and other issues. Another Characteristic of the Gaza Strip is its people. The Gaza Strip has one of the highest overall growth rates and population densities in the world. More than half of the Gazans lives in the region’s urban centers.
