F. Scott Fitzgerald’s quote, “Show me a hero, and I'll write you a tragedy,” illustrates the ethos of the American hero evident in the movie, The Last of the Mohicans. Throughout the movie, there is a distinct impression Nathaniel Bumppo is doing what is right and what is good. This essay response will focus on Nathaniel’s actions in terms of the ethos of the American hero as represented by Cooper in Last of the Mohicans in relation to Fitzgerald’s statement and the American Mythos. From the introduction of Nathaniel Bumppo to the end of the film, Cooper never forgets the ethos of the American hero. It is evident throughout the film, Nathaniel only supports what is right, which is precisely what the ethos of an American hero revolves around. For example, in the beginning of the movie, Nathaniel, his brother, and his father kill a buck for food. After they had approached the kill, the father spoke to it as though the buck were human. Watching this experience builds various emotions towards Nathaniel as a hero.
