The Roaring Twenties reflected a social rebellion against the conservative tradition established in the Progressive Movements of the Teens. The Progressives adamantly campaigned for and eventually received the ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment, which established a dry nation in 1920. The rejection of the conservative policies, that were adopted in the Teens and the early Twenties, reflects a reverse on the ideals of the Progressive Movement and the rebellious nature of the Roaring Twenties. Although alcohol was illegal, the new self-indulgent philosophy for many of people in the Twenties included materialism, sex, drugs, and of course alcohol, which helped to produce "the greatest, gaudiest spree in history," dubbed as such by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
