        SHOULD DRUGS BE LEGALIZED?

There is a lot of controversy over whether or not drugs should be legalized. People will argue to no end on each side. Some people say drugs should be legalized because they have the idea that people are going to do them anyway, so why not legalize it? People on the other side say drugs shouldn’t be legalized no matter what the reason because they are harmful for the people that use them and also for others around the people on the drugs. I think drugs should not be legalized. There are a lot of reasons why I believe this. Some of the reasons are: one, they are harmful for those that are on the drugs and people they are around; two, where would our country be if everyone was walking around stoned; would anything get done? Three, the drug industry is very violent and it would not get better if drugs were legalized.

First, drugs are very harmful for people that use them. All drugs are harmful. LSD, or Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, is a psychological drug and has very strong effects on the brain. LSD has been known to cause long term effects such as persistent psychosis, prolonged depression, and faulty judgement. Physically LSD can cause chromosomal damage to white blood cells. Physical and psychological dependence is also a result.

Another drug that causes very strong psychological dependence is cocaine. Chronic use of cocaine effects the body both physically and mentally. Some negative physical effects are skin abscesses, perforation of the septum in the nose, weight loss and damage to the nervous system. Some negative psychological effects are extreme restlessness, anxiety, irritability, and sometimes, paranoid psychosis.

The drug with the least effects but still just as dangerous as the others, is marijuana. Marijuana, which was originally used for medicinal purposes, has negative effects such as confusion, acute panic reaction, anxiety attacks, fear and a sense of helplessness. Chronic marijuana users sometimes develop an “amotivational syndrome” which is passivity and decreased motivation. Drug use is dangerous to other people besides the drug users themselves. This is because people on drugs aren’t in their right state of mind and can unintentionally hurt others.  (Encarta Encyclopedia)
