     There were many advantages of the movement in Medieval Europe for a feudal structure of society to the growth and establishments of towns.  Although King Louis IX improved the feudal system in many ways, the establishments of towns were truly a better from of society.  Some of the advantages of the establishment of towns were the idea of peace, the improvements in the economy, and the development of a court system.
     The idea of peace being the most important goal, was one of the many great advantages that the town's people had.  At first the community was after "personal liberty", which gave the merchant the freedom of coming and going where he wanted, and of living where he wished.  "Then came the instituting in the city of a "peace"-that is to say, of a penal code-which would guarantee security and then came the abolition of those prestations most incompatible with the carrying on of trade and industry, and with the possession and acquisition of land"(440).  The idea of the peace that the townspeople were after basically gave them freedom.  Another thing that was great about the townspeople was their idea of "let each help the other like a brother"(pg. 449).  The most important thing to the townspeople was their town.  Their main goal was to better their community.  These new goals of the townspeople were set out to better their community, and they did.
     During the rule of King Louis IX, the system of government was very unorganized.  The King, Louis IX, was the highest form of authority, but as Father James Cassidy said in his lecture, "authority implies, but does not necessarily confer power".  This was one of the main problems of the feudalistic system.  Although King Louis IX was the highest form of authority, he was not the only form of authority.  King Louis IX had a group of about twenty men who he called Baillis.  These men were set to perform many of the duties of the king.  They were responsible to exercise judicial and financial functions, hear appeals by judgements, supervise the collection of taxes in their district, oversee the castles in their districts, and raise men for the military.  The only problem with this form of government was that many of the Baillis' abused their power.  So King Louis developed a group of men called the enqueteurs, who investigated the Baillis'.  But again King Louis ran into the same problem.  Many of the enqueteurs were corrupt in their practices.  One thing that King Louis IX did in his system of govern...
