Children of the Holocaust

     Full statistics of children who died in the holocaust will never be known.  Some
estimates range as high as 1.5 million murdered children.  This figure includes more than 1.2
Jewish children, tens of thousands of gypsy children, and thousands of handicapped children
who were murdered under Nazi rule in Germany.  Although children were seldom targets of
Nazi violence because they were children, they were persecuted along with their families for
religious, racial, or political reasons.  Chances of survival were some what higher for older
children, since they could be assigned to labor in concentration camps and ghettos.
     There were many humiliations confronting Gypsy and Jewish children in German
classrooms.  Teachers would teach other students racial biology that humiliated Gypsy and
Jewish children and designated them as racially inferior.
     With the onset of the war, Jewish children throughout Europe were restricted with
their families in overcrowded ghettos and transit camps.  Children were exposed to
malnutrition, disease exposure, and early death.
