Black Like Me
The book Black Like Me is a journal that tells of John Howard Griffin’s firsthand account of dealing with racism in the “Deep South”. He conducted an experiment that changed his skin tone from a white skin tone to a black skin tone. He did this by taking medication that would turn his skin dark and by putting makeup on his skin to make it look darker. His experiment took place in the 1960’s when the battle about segregation was at its highest point. He traveled to southern cities in search of the pain inflicted against African Americans just because of the color of their skin. He soon felt the hate that he never knew existed just by changing from one race to another in a matter of several minutes. He soon learned what real hate feels like, and that it was not easy being of African American descent in the south during this turbulent time. His experience as a “black man” taught him many important lessons.
