The Bald Eagle

The bald eagle has been our nations bird since 1782.  It means
freedom, power and majesty.  The bald eagle is a magnificent creature. It has
been on our endangered species list over the years. It is sad to think that
there are people who could kill this wonderful bird for there own gain.  I hope
after reading my report you will feel the same as I do.

The bald eagle is a very beautiful bird. It is not actually bald like its
name says.  It has white feathers on its head.  The word bald comes from
“piebald” which means, white and black adult plumage. The eagle’s eyesight
is 4-8 times sharper than ours, so it can see a lot better than we can.  The
eagles bill is very sharp and strong so it can tear apart the fish that it wants to

The eagles feet have very sharp talons or toenails.  He has spicules that are
scales on his toes that help him grip the slippery fish.  The eagle’s wingspan

catches the fish?  Well, the eagle looks over the water and find his target and
follows the fish for a while, then it swoops down and digs his talons into the
fish and takes it to its perch.  Bald eagles hunt young sea otters by listening
for the noises while the otters eat in the kelp beds.

The eagles protect themselves with their beak and talons from larger
animals.  Humans hunt the eagles for their feathers and their meat to sell to
restaurants.  Bounty hunters in Alaska shot an estimate of 140,000 eagles in
the early 1900s.  Eagle do not live in well populated areas because of the
threat of  humans.

The babies of the eagle are called chicks.  Usually the mother lays two
eggs  several days apart. The eggs are hatched at different times, also.  The
first hatched will be fed ...
