Monaco is one of the smallest countries in the world, with only an area of less than 1 sq. mile. Monaco is located on the French Riviera, which borders the Mediterranean sea. It is bordered on all other sides by France.

     The people of Monaco enjoy a stable government and economy. Monaco is ruled by a prince. The prince since 1949 has been Prince Rainier the third. Until 1962 the people of Monaco did not have all of the rights that they do today. In 1962 under pressure from France the prince sighed a new constitution giving his people new rights. The rights that came forward at this time where that the woman in society had the right to vote and that all people even if guilty of an haneous crime had the right to live out their natural life ( the abolishement of the death penalty).
Many wealthy people moved to Monaco during this time. Until 1963 the people of Monaco did not have to pay taxes. Then when under pressure from France the prince passed laws to tax its citizens. Monaco has a bombing economy with two-thirds coming from production of beer, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, precision surgical instrumunts ,and processed foods. Monaco is also a tourist attraction with tourism equaling 600,000 tourists each year. They come for the beaches, warm weather, but mostly for the government owned casinos. Some racing fans may come for the Monte Carlo Rally and the Monaco Grand Prix.

     The people of Monaco are called Monegasque. But only one-seventh of the people that live in Monaco are Monegasque. The rest are French. The official language of Monaco is Monegasque. But most of the people in Monaco speak French.
