    A dentist sits his patient in the dental chair. He tells her to relax her entire body
and suggest that when her eyelids are relaxed, they will feel so heavy they will close.
Then the dentist tells the patient to imagine that theres a bucket of ice water next to her
chair. She will put her right hand into it for a while. he says, and the hand will become
numb. Then she will raise her numb hand up and place it to the sore place on her jaw and
hold it there. The Jaw will also feel numb.

    The patient follows all these directions. The Dentist then tells her to remover
herself from reality and imagine herself in a far away place. She imagines herself on a
sunny beach, where she can feel the wind and the sand. She can smell the ocean scent
and hear the waves crashing. But through out all of this she cannot feel the pain of the
extraction of her tooth from her “numb jaw”. The patient is in a state of hypnosis. It was
used as a substitution for an anest
