Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet is a book about life in the middle ages as it deals with the building of a cathedral at Kingsbury Prior. The characters in this book are very well developed rounded people that we the readers find ourselves either loving or hating. Anyone who reads this book will see that the line between the characters is drawn out early on. We can easily tell which of the characters we will like and the ones that we will hate. I am going to describe two of these characters Tom Builder and William Hamleigh.
Tom Builder had a dream, like every man he needed to feel like he had accomplished something with his life. But with a family to support he felt that his dream would never become a reality. But if this were to be his fate this book wouldn’t have much of a story. His life didn’t seem to be going well; he lost his wife and newborn son, who he had to abandon to save the rest of his family. It seemed that his life couldn’t get any worse until a disaster turned into a miracle. He saw his opportunity he would rebuild the cathedral at Kingsbury. A cathedral was the greatest building of his time; nothing could even come close. It was a work of art. It was Tom’s Dream. Tom became the master builder and begun work on his dream. Tom was one of my favorite characters in the story; he was a kind gentile-hearted man who put other people’s well being over his own. His death came as a surprise to me he seemed like he was the “main” character in the story, but he dies part way though the story. I think that without Tom the story would have been generally dull and heartless.
